Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has welcomed former Liberal MP Pat Farmer at the base of Uluru at the end of his trek across the country to raise awareness about the Voice referendum.

Pat Farmer finishes run to Uluru for the Voice

It was just a couple of hours ago that we saw Pat Farmer run around the base of the rock finishing that epic journey. He said this was one of the most spectacular parts of that long trek around the country. Here this morning the light was beautiful, there was a breeze, it was cool, but during that long trek he did long stretches on bitumen in the middle of the day. He talked about the sunscreen, the sweat, the blisters, the pairs of shoes that he tore through and he did all of that to raise awareness for the voice to parliament. When he arrived here at Uluru he had a pretty good cheer squad. He had the Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, some well-known yes campaigners like Noel Pearson and also his family. So as he came around this bend he received cheers, some hugs, of course the water was passed over quite quickly as well. Now after he finished this journey he talked about what he thought about when he was on the road, when he met Indigenous leaders across the country and he was talking about how he could feel their connection to the country which their ancestors had walked on for millennia and was talking about how through this journey it's become more and more clear to him the importance of the voice to parliament. Now he was also flanked by some members of the Central Land Council on that final leg and they stood up with him and the Prime Minister just shortly afterwards talking about Pat Farmer, his journey and the importance of the voice to parliament. I express my utter admiration and awe for the commitment that Pat Farmer has shown. There are so many Australians out there, tens of thousands of Australians, giving up their time to advance this nation in a positive way. And the Yes campaign, I'm very proud, has been positive and optimistic and forward looking. But no one has done more than this bloke. This was about so much more than just finding a spectacular backdrop for Pat Farmer to finish his run. This place is highly symbolic in the national conversation around the referendum. It is this country that is in fact the birthplace of the Uluru Statement from the Heart. It was here about six years ago at the Uluru Constitutional Convention that Indigenous leaders first put this proposal of a voice to parliament to the Australian public. So the Prime Minister has been here and he's been meeting with senior elders, Anangu people who were involved in designing the Statement to the Heart. Also some of the artists who helped design the frame of the Uluru Statement from the Heart. He was greeted. There was a ceremony where they sang for him, where they danced for him, and they talked about their enduring connection to this land, but also the disempowerment, the disadvantage that they feel and their hopes and aspirations for the voice to parliament. So Anthony Albanese came back here as a reminder of where the voice to parliament came from as this referendum campaign comes to a close. And as it comes to a close, it does look like the Yes campaign and the government are well behind in this race. And already people here are starting to talk about what Sunday, October 15 might feel like if there is a no vote. And some people here have said to me that it will be a day of mourning, that it will be unbearable to think what a no vote will feel like. So that's just some of the messages that we've heard on the ground here at Uluru.
