Nearly 100,000 people have taken a dip at three River Seine bathing sites in Paris since their July opening, with authorities extending the swimming season, the city's mayor said.

Paris has decided to extend its river swimming season after a strong public response, with almost 100,000 people taking part in the initiative. Two of the three designated swimming sites along the Seine will remain open beyond the original end date, with the Grenelle site closing on September 7 and the Bercy site on September 14. 

The project marks the first time in a century that Parisians have been able to swim in the Seine, following a significant clean-up effort costing 1.4 billion euros ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics. The future of these swimming sites will be determined by the next mayor, but officials anticipate the program will continue in the coming years.

After Parisians' first summer in a century splashing in the Seine, the French capital is extending its swimming season. Wednesday, Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo announced that due to the popularity of the urban swimming project, two of the three sites will remain open past the end of August. The Grenelle site, with its dazzling view of the Eiffel Tower, will now close on September 7, while the Bercy site will keep its doors open until September 14. The mayor's office is celebrating what it calls a historic success. Everyone said it wouldn't work, that it would be terrible, that we would experience something absolutely appalling and that it was foolish to do it. But in the end it was a huge success, and today everyone is congratulating us, so we're very happy about that. I think this is a historic first year after a hundred years of swimming bans, and perhaps urban swimming will continue to develop in Paris and its region. The Seine, previously closed to bathers since 1923, was made swimmable leading up to the 2024 Paris Olympics, notably for open water races. A staggering 1.4 billion euros was spent to remove pollution from the river. Now Parisians have finally been able to enjoy a refreshing reminder of the Olympic Games. The future of the Seine swimming sites is now in the hands of Anne Hidalgo's successor, who will be chosen in the March 2026 municipal elections. But officials say they expect the Seine to reopen to swimmers for years to come.
