A 61-year-old woman, Maha Almazri, was detained during a raid on her Bankstown home after the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation deemed her a security threat. Her visa was cancelled under the Migration Act, which allows the Minister to act if a person is suspected of failing the character test and if cancellation is considered in the national interest. Authorities have not provided details on the specific reasons for her detention, and her family is seeking legal advice while calling for her release. 

The case has drawn attention from the Palestinian community and pro-Palestine activists, who are concerned for Almazri's safety if deported. Recent protests in the area have led to clashes with police, but demonstrators are now holding a vigil to avoid further conflict. The Home Affairs Office has not confirmed whether Almazri will be charged or deported.

Ms Almazri was served a notice of visa cancellation yesterday, citing the government's powers under the Migration Act if the Minister suspects a person does not pass the character test and the Minister is satisfied that the cancellation is in the national interest. The Prime Minister was this morning asked why Ms Almazri falls into this category. But I don't comment on national security issues. What I do is have confidence in our national security agencies to do their job and they do it very well. She vehemently denies that she's a threat. Do you have any more to add to that? No. Tony Burke's office would not expand on the reasons behind the cancellation, only saying that information in the public domain may not be consistent with that of intelligence and security agencies. Now, it was a protest here that made headlines just a fortnight ago as it eventuated into a clash with police where five people were charged. Former Greens candidate Hannah Thomas was hospitalised with an eye injury sustained during her arrest and she has just undergone a second eye surgery and New South Wales police are undertaking a critical incident investigation. Now, demonstrators are calling tonight's action a vigil instead, hoping to avoid a repeat of that event but there are at least eight police cars here so certainly a presence, Sandra.
