Palestinian Canadians want the federal government to move faster on a special visa program meant to relocate family members in Gaza. Since the start of the war two years ago, 880 people out of 5,000 applicants have come to Canada through the program.

Palestinian Canadians are experiencing significant delays in reuniting with family members fleeing the conflict in Gaza. Many, like Iman in Ontario, have been waiting over a year as relatives remain stuck in Egypt, awaiting security clearance to enter Canada. The Canadian immigration department reports that out of 5,000 applicants, only about 880 have arrived so far. 

Lawyers and advocates say government concerns over security have slowed the process, with some federal sources indicating a preference to address the conflict diplomatically rather than through immigration. The immigration department maintains it is working with local authorities to ensure the safety of those still in Gaza.

When Mona Al-Arbash wants to speak to her family in Canada she must cross through a war zone to find a place with Wi-Fi. A CBC freelance videographer captured this call in Gaza. Her hope, Mona says, is to travel to Canada, be with her sister whom we met in Coburg, Ontario moments after that call. Iman moved to Canada a decade ago but the single mother of two has been unable to get most of her loved ones here. My child Zahid, he's four years old and every time he saw a flight in the sky he prayed that, oh, I hope the next flight will have my grandma and my uncle and my cousin. It's Mona and her family in Gaza that Iman is most worried about. She's already lost a brother to the war killed fleeing an Israeli attack in their neighbourhood, she says. They had a white flag and they started running to evacuate the area but then there were snipers and they started to shoot people. He got a bullet in his head. Her prayer now that her kids will soon see some family members She's smuggled out to Egypt but have been stuck waiting for security checks for more than a year. I sent many emails. Their answer is just like, wait. Everything is done but we're waiting for the result of security check. The immigration department says some 880 applicants have arrived on a total of 5,000. I think there's definitely more the government can do. The immigration lawyer says Ottawa won't be able to delay security approvals forever. Even if your security screening is delayed because of actions of third parties that you have no control over that in some situations the duration would have been too long and they would be required to move forward. Federal sources told CBC News there was resistance in setting up the program within government due to security concerns as well as a preference to engage with Israel on its conduct in the war rather than immigration.
