Barefoot, clutching a small bag of flour, with features weary beyond his years, he was supposed to return to his family after collecting food from a controversial distribution centre. But that day, he vanished under a hail of bullets. I am Abdel Rahim's mother. He went to the Americans to collect aid for his siblings. He sat there and the Americans gave him the nickname, Amir. The boy's real name was Abdel Rahim. As his mother lost all trace of him in May, she had nearly given up hope of finding him. But she says that the images of him were recently circulated by a former American soldier and contractor who had been in Gaza, gave her new reason to start searching again. For six days I searched for him through the Red Cross. There's no organisation I didn't ask, no place I didn't search, even now I don't know where he went. I am pleading with the Red Cross to help me search. I want to know where is he? Is he alive? Is he dead? While the pictures captured that day of the boy thanking a soldier went viral, what happened to him next remained unknown, until now. This is emotional for me to get through. The former subcontractor with the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Aid Foundation, Anthony Aguila, says he remembers the missing boy very well. He reaches out and he holds my hand and he kisses my hand and he says shukran and he collected his items and he walked back to the group. And then he was shot at with pepper spray and tear gas and stun grenades and bullets shot at his feet in the air, shooting into this crowd. And Palestinian civilians, human beings are dropping to the ground, getting shot. And Amir was one of them. Amir walked 12km to get food, got nothing but scraps, thanked us for it and died. That's what we're doing. It's testimony that's left the boy's mother heartbroken. That aid point has to be shut down. We have small children, all of them need food, but I can't get it. Tomorrow I will go back to them again and I'll ask them, is he alive, is he dead? Her search for her son will continue in what's become known in Gaza as the refrigerators of the dead.
