Ottawa police are investigating an incident in which a young Muslim woman was assaulted and threatened on an OC Transpo bus in Kanata. The suspect, described as a white, English-speaking male, allegedly made Islamophobic comments, slapped the victim, and issued death threats before leaving the bus. 

No arrests have been made as police continue to seek witnesses and information. The incident has drawn condemnation from both the Prime Minister and Ottawa's Mayor, and has raised concerns about public safety among the Muslim community. OC Transpo has emphasized its existing safety measures, while the Ottawa Police Hate Crimes and Bias Unit leads the ongoing investigation.

Ottawa police are looking for anyone who witnessed a young Muslim woman being assaulted. The apparent hate-motivated attack happened Monday afternoon on an OC Transpo bus. Kaleigh Martin joins us with the latest. Kaleigh. Yeah Rachelle, police say that they responded to a call from a bus in Kanata which OC Transpo has now identified as route 63. Officers arrived on scene around 5 p.m. Monday. They spoke with the victim and received some information and received there was a suspect, white male, English-speaking, approximately 5 foot 8, thin build, who assaulted and threatened the young Muslim woman. Police are seeking witnesses and information as they continue to investigate. They haven't made any arrests in relation to the incident. Police wouldn't confirm the nature of the assault or the threats but a prominent member of the Muslim community has been in touch with the family. She says the man made Islamophobic comments to the girl and then slapped her in the face before making death threats. She says he then left the bus before police were called. The family and the victim are still shaken up. They're just really worried for their their daughter, you know, worried about her her sense of well-being. I encouraged the family to seek out victim support services through the Ottawa Police Service if they feel the need for that and to ensure that, you know, she feels well-loved and well-cared for. Kayleigh, what has been the response to this? Both the Prime Minister and the Mayor have posted about the incident on X. Mark Carney condemned the act saying, hate and violence have no place in our city or our country and Mark Sutcliffe called the act reprehensible. The Muslim community in Ottawa was shocked by the assault and has questions of their own. People are naturally afraid, particularly females, very, very concerned about whether it's safe in our city. Is it safe to take public transport? Some are angry, you know, why was this individual allowed to be attacked in a public space? For its part, OC Transpo says its network is very safe. Its Chief Safety Officer told CBC that it is equipped with several safety and security measures, such as special constables and its Transit Operations Control Centre that monitors cameras throughout the system. She says the investigation is handled by the Ottawa Police. The Police's Hate Crimes and Bias Unit continues to investigate the assault and its service says that it is working with the community to support them in any way it can. Thanks for this.
