The men's and women's Olympic triathlons were successfully held in Paris’s Seine River after water tests met IOC safety standards just hours before the events were scheduled. Despite concerns over water quality, the river was deemed safe for the athletes to swim.

Paris officials invested two billion Canadian dollars to ensure the Seine was swimmable. Measures included constructing a giant basin to capture excess rainwater and prevent untreated sewage from entering the river. However, intense rain could still cause some overflow, potentially introducing bacteria like E. coli into the water.

Health Canada's guideline for safe levels of bacteria in water is 235 colony forming units per 100 milliliters, while European standards and those used by the World Triathlon Federation allow for up to 900 units. Water samples taken prior to the events showed levels between 488 and 770, which were within the European safety limits.

An expert in water testing noted that understanding the full risks of swimming in the Seine could take years of study. For now, the focus for athletes was on competing, with some expressing a willingness to accept any potential health risks in order to participate in the Olympics.

Water samples taken Tuesday showed levels had fallen to between 488 and 770. What I can say is that we followed rigorously the process. This water testing expert says understanding the risks of swimming in the Seine can take years of study. But in the meantime. I guess we will see in the next days if there are people getting sick or not. For athletes competing the focus was singular. I think we were just stoked. We're racers at heart right? That's what we came to do. We came to race at the Olympics. If I have poison after or if I get sick I don't care. I did the triathlon.
