French officials have assured that there will be substantial and robust security arrangements in place, although specific details were not disclosed. Amidst these tensions, an investigation has been launched by French police in response to online death threats received by some Israeli athletes. The French interior minister confirmed that the Israeli team would be under continuous protection by French police and specialized agents.

The participation of Israeli athletes has attracted criticism from some quarters. The head of the Palestinian Olympic Committee, Jibril Rajoub, has called for the Israeli team to be banned, citing high civilian casualties in the ongoing conflict. Eight Palestinian athletes, including boxer Waseem Abu Sal, are competing, and Abu Sal wore a T-shirt depicting bombed children during the opening ceremony. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has allowed this anti-war message despite its rules against political statements.

The IOC has also ruled that Russian and Belarusian athletes must compete under a neutral flag due to Russia's annexation of Ukrainian territory, which broke Olympic regulations. The Palestinian Olympic Committee is questioning why similar measures have not been applied to Israel, pointing to the deaths of at least 400 Palestinian athletes in the Gaza conflict.

The volatile situation in the Middle East poses a significant challenge for Olympic organisers in their effort to keep political issues separate from the games.

The IOC has strict rules on political statements, but the anti-war message was allowed. The T-shirt represented the image that exists in Palestine today, children killed and dying under rubble. With the situation in the Middle East ever more volatile, it will be increasingly difficult for Olympic organisers to keep politics out of the games.
