This move comes after recent demonstrations at synagogue entrances, raising concerns about the safety and accessibility for worshippers.

However, far-left Jewish organizations, including Jewish Voice for Peace NYC and Jews for Economic and Racial Justice, have criticized the proposal, calling it an attack on free speech. Rabbi Mark Wilds, speaking on behalf of concerned community members, emphasized the need to balance First Amendment rights with the ability for Jews to safely attend religious services, referencing previous incidents of harassment outside synagogues.

New York City's new mayor, Zohran Mamdani, is now garnering criticism from far-left Jewish groups, all because Mamdani is trying to protect Jewish places of worship. Mamdani is proposing buffer zones around synagogues with some laws aimed at keeping protests at a distance, in light of some recent protests on the footsteps of synagogues in the city. But far-left, anti-Zionist Jewish groups like Jewish Voice for Peace New York City and Jews for Economic and Racial Justice are protesting the buffer proposal, calling it an attack on free speech. What exactly does this mean for the Jewish community in New York City? More, we're joined now by Rabbi Mark Wilds, the founder and director of the Manhattan Jewish Experience. Rabbi Wilds, many Jewish groups in New York City, they're concerned right now for their safety after some of these violent protests camped outside their synagogues, yet now you also have some of these fringe left-wing Jewish groups saying it's their freedom of speech to protest. How do you make sense of these different voices? I mean, I think it's ridiculous. No one is saying that these protesters cannot congregate and speak their mind. We just want to make sure that them speaking and exercising their First Amendment rights is going to not prevent Jewish people from coming into synagogue. We had this incident at Park East Synagogue, where it was very, very difficult for people to get into the synagogue and do their worship. This is nonsense. These rules have been in place in most cities throughout the United States. If you want to protest, there's a way to do it. You do it in a way that can be seen and can be heard, but doesn't prevent regular ongoing business from taking place in that society. We have to figure out a way in this country for people to exercise their First Amendment rights without preventing people from living normal lives. And being able to practice and worship in our synagogues, in our churches, in our mosques is a regular part of normal life. Balancing protecting places of worship while also balancing protecting free speech, it's something that it seems that these buffer zones could help. Do you expect the city to actually move forward with these buffer zones? Or could some of these voices hinder that movement? I mean, look, I don't know what kind of power these voices have, but I think it would be a very, very sad day in any American city or anywhere throughout the world if we could not go on and continue to live our lives as Jews, as proud Jews, being able to just congregate and go to shul. This is going to prevent people from feeling comfortable. We're going to end up having a situation like you have in Rome or you have in other parts of Europe, where you have to dress up the synagogue as though it's like not a synagogue. And it would be really an awful thing. So I hope they don't get more grounding. And if the mayor is offering to do this, for God's sakes, then, you know, we should stand behind him. You know, I'm just a little surprised, because he did not stand behind Parkey Synagogue when that terrible incident took place. There were Jews harassed on the way into shul, on the way into synagogue. That cannot be. And you can't use the First Amendment as some kind of excuse. Certainly more needs to be done, and hopefully more will be done when it comes to protecting Jewish rights of worship in a place with one of the largest communities of Jews in the world.
