The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has identified a shortage of truck stop parking as a contributing factor in a deadly Greyhound bus crash in 2023. The crash occurred when the bus collided with parked trucks that were situated on the side of the road, resulting in several fatalities. The NTSB cited driver fatigue, inadequate oversight, and a lack of sufficient parking for large vehicles as primary factors.

According to the Trucking Association, there is a significant imbalance between the number of trucks on the road and available parking spaces, with only one parking spot for every 11 trucks. Some cities have also implemented regulations limiting where trucks can park, further complicating the situation for drivers. Truck drivers report that finding legal and safe parking is frequently a challenge, leading many to park in areas such as road shoulders or off-ramps when no other options are available.

NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy emphasized the safety risks posed by inadequate parking for large vehicles, stating that this issue puts lives at risk on highways. Reports indicate that incidents involving vehicles striking parked trucks in unofficial spots are not isolated, highlighting the ongoing danger to all road users. 



NTSB blames fatal bus crash in part on truck parking shortage

Just ahead of the holiday travel rush, the National Transportation and Safety Board is putting a spotlight on a growing highway danger. The NTSB says a deadly 2023 Greyhound crash never should have happened, blaming it in part on a serious shortage of truck stop parking along the nation's highways. Joining me now is CBS's senior transportation correspondent, Chris Van Cleef. So Chris, first let's start with that 2023 crash. What is the NTSB saying? Basically, they're saying that driver fatigue, a lack of oversight, and a lack of adequate parking for big rigs along the national highway system were the factors that contributed to this deadly crash that killed several people on board this Greyhound bus, where basically in the middle of the night, it slammed into the back of parked big rigs. That they couldn't see. That there were a host of factors, but basically as the bus came around the corner, it hit the trucks that were parked there. You've been covering this for a long time. What are the drivers saying about this? The drivers complain that they can't find parking reliably. The Trucking Association says for every 11 trucks on the road, there's one parking place. And many cities have cracked down on big rigs parking on side streets and things. We talked to one truck owner back in 2023 about this very situation. How hard is it to find a place to park for one of these things? It can be from easy, a small percent of the time, to impossible, a large percent of the time. How often does it happen where they're parking somewhere other than a rest stop, like on the shoulder of an off ramp? It's a daily occurrence. And it may only be for a short period of time, but when your body needs to rest, you can't just throw it aside. And whenever you've gone through two or three rest stops and truck stops, you've already pushed the time. And you know, there are restrictions on how long drivers can drive. So it factors into do they stay on the road for the entire time they're allowed, or if they see a parking spot, do they take it, even though they lose some time to work? The chair of the National Transportation Safety Board, Jennifer Homendy, said this about the parking issue. Until we address this important safety issue, lives are at risk on our nation's roads. Wow, so that sounds really bad. So it sounds really bad. And if I'm an other kind of driver, does this make things more dangerous for me? It does, because we profiled a gentleman who lost his life pulling into a rest stop because his vehicle slammed into the back of a semi that was parked on the edge of the off-ramp in this rest stop. And if you drive, we sent cameras out across the country when we were gathering this story. It was not hard to find big rigs that were either on the side of the road or on the side of a rest stop or on the side of an off-ramp because they don't have places to park.
