It’s an incredible milestone for train enthusiasts, with NSW Railways marking 170 years as hundreds retraced one of the nation’s most important first passenger journeys aboard a beloved steam locomotive.

The celebration also highlighted the significant changes in rail travel over the past century, including increased reliability and affordability for passengers. Railway workers and enthusiasts reflected on the legacy and ongoing importance of the railway network, which now serves over a million passengers daily in Sydney.

It's one of the gems of our heritage fleet. The 110-year-old steam locomotive, alongside a red Rattler from the 1980s, today retraced The historic journey from Sydney to Parramatta, first taken in 1855. When this arrived, this was like a new Tesla. You know, brand new, you're going above the speed of a horse. People thought they might disintegrate if they went too fast. It marked the birth of publicly owned rail transport in Australia. Steam engines, by themselves, are difficult enough because you've got to judge everything. So you've got to judge the water, the coal consumption. But how much do you love driving it? I love driving trains, it's the best thing in my life. Sophia's family has worked in rail for 143 years. I know, amazing, right? Everything from drivers to guards, station masters, district superintendents and signalers, which I am now myself. Sydney has a very large and a very complex railway. We've got more than a million passengers every day. We need to keep on the job. Reliability for passengers is very important. So much has changed for the better in the past century. Believe it or not, train travel has actually got a lot cheaper back then, jumping on board the nanny. Would have cost the equivalent of $32. It's now around $6. Ali Donaldson, 10 News.
