Aid agencies, including Doctors Without Borders and the United Nations, warn of rising malnutrition, especially among children, and say that without urgent funding, critical health facilities may close. The crisis is compounded by economic hardship and insecurity, with some displaced people risking their lives to find food or facing pressure to join armed groups. The loss of food aid threatens to worsen an already severe humanitarian situation in the region.

There are no jobs, even if there are, they're heavy labour. Many of us are too weak to do them. These are families who fled violence, lived in limbo for years and survived on humanitarian aid. Now many are forced to fend for themselves, heading into the bush to collect firewood or trying to farm in dangerous terrain. Many never return. They are either killed or taken by the fighters. It happened to my neighbour just days ago. The United Nations says without immediate funding, the consequences will be dire. Approximately 1.3 million people will be left with very dangerous choices if no food assistance is available. That could be joining armed groups or risking their lives to migrate or exchanging sex for food. More than 2.6 million people in the region are facing moderate to severe food shortages. Now aid workers say the most vulnerable, especially children, are even at greater risk. Doctors Without Borders warns malnutrition cases are already rising and the United Nations says unless more money comes in, it may shut down facilities treating more than 300,000 severely malnourished children. Officials are now forced to make difficult choices. To focus scarce resources on the broader population of 5 million or try to save the displaced. Here in the markets, the prices of local grains have crashed, yet many people can't afford two meals a day. The loss of the local currency's value has hurt people's purchasing power and it's even worse for victims of Boko Haram's 15-year violent campaign here in the northeast. As the funding dries up, the humanitarian crisis in northeast Nigeria is worsening. For the displaced, the end of food aid could mean a choice between starvation or something far worse.
