Chinese officials have yet to confirm any agreement regarding TikTok's operations in the United States, despite recent announcements from U.S. leadership. The Chinese foreign ministry stated that it respects the will of enterprises and supports business negotiations that align with market rules and Chinese regulations. 

The Commerce Ministry is currently conducting technical reviews to ensure any deal complies with China's export control rules, particularly those concerning sensitive technologies used in TikTok's algorithm. ByteDance, TikTok's parent company, has not commented on the situation. Analysts note that the Chinese government often avoids formal confirmations, possibly to retain flexibility in negotiations and to consider domestic public opinion.

No clear confirmation from Beijing around TikTok deal with U.S.

On that front, let's get to our Eunice Yoon, who's been covering this from the Beijing side. Hey, Eunice. Hey, guys. Well, like you said, there has been no clear confirmation out of Beijing. The foreign ministry was asked about President Trump's TikTok announcement overnight. And the ministry said, the Chinese government respects the will of enterprises and is happy to see enterprises doing business negotiations on the basis of market rules and reaching a solution that meets China's laws and regulations and balances interests. We hope that the United States will provide an open, fair and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese enterprises to invest in the United States. Now, the next step from a technical standpoint lies with the Commerce Ministry, because the Commerce Ministry had said that it is conducting technical reviews and that it wants to make sure that the deal would be in line with the export control rules, which were revised in 2020, to include some of the more sensitive technologies that are related to TikTok's algorithm. At that time, the state media, the state news agency Xinhua, had said that ByteDance would have to get a license approved by Beijing. And that is because the technologies were put on the restricted list and not on the prohibited list. ByteDance has not responded to our request for any type of comment, guys. Is this unusual, Eunice, or is this the way things typically go? And we shouldn't necessarily expect that there's going to be some sort of formal announcement. Right. Right. It is definitely the MO of the Chinese government. They don't necessarily want to confirm anything because they're able to give themselves a way out, you could say, because up until now, they've been saying that they have agreed to a basic framework consensus. But if they don't confirm that there's a deal on the table, then they can say, well, we never agreed to this deal. So there is like an MO that goes on with the way that Chinese operate. And it could be a way that they're trying to gain leverage on the Trump administration in broader negotiations. I would say that there's another potential reason. And that is that the Chinese government has to think about what the Chinese public thinks. Because for the past several years, we've been hearing, oh, the Chinese government is definitely never going to sell out ByteDance or TikTok, or we will not sell out any Chinese company. And now it's looking like they might be conducting some arrangement that would allow TikTok to go.
