Nine people were killed in Oicha, a town in North Kivu province of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, after suspected Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels set fire to a house during an attack. The assault occurred while many residents were watching a football match, and several homes and properties were destroyed. 

This attack follows a series of assaults in nearby Lubero that left 45 people dead. The ADF is one of over 100 armed groups active in the region, contributing to ongoing violence and displacement. Despite the presence of the Congolese army, Ugandan forces, and UN peacekeepers, residents report feeling unprotected and express frustration at the lack of progress in peace efforts.

People in Owicha, a town in North Kivu province, are shattered. Many of them had been relaxing, watching a football match when the attack happened on Saturday night. Homes were burned, as well as properties around the town. A day early, 45 people were killed in a series of assaults on villages in Lubero, about 40 kilometers away from Beni. Authorities say the Allied Democratic Forces is responsible. The ADF is one of the most powerful armed groups operating the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. They came at night when we were all sleeping. My brother was burnt in his home. Other people were watching the game in their home. The group has waged a campaign of terror for years, killing thousands of people, leaving entire villages empty. The army has been unable to end the violence, even with Ugandan forces fighting alongside its soldiers and UN peacekeepers deployed to the area. This situation has lasted for so long. We feel that not much is being done to protect us. We are dying, yet the authorities are just interested in sharing power and enjoying life. We are on our own. The ADF is just one piece of a much bigger puzzle. The United Nations says more than 100 armed groups are active in North and South Kivu fighting for land, power and control of the region's vast mineral wealth. Among them, the Rwandan-backed M23 rebels, a group that has seized large swathes of territory this year, displacing hundreds of thousands of people. Peace talks between the government and the M23 scheduled to take place in Qatar have not started yet. For many here in Goma, that delay is causing more uncertainty and fear. For them, there is little difference between the ADF and the M23. What matters is survival, and they hope that one day the killing will stop.
