The curfew, which will remain until public order is restored, follows demonstrations where hundreds of mostly young people defied a government ban, barricading roads and clashing with police.

Security forces responded with rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse crowds, while reports emerged of looting at various businesses across the city. Hospital sources have confirmed that at least five people lost their lives during the unrest.
