Mass school abductions have become a recurring issue in northern Nigeria, with at least 1,500 students kidnapped since 2014. No group has claimed responsibility for this latest attack, which officials say is complicated by ongoing security challenges and community tensions in the region.

It was at this secondary girls' school where scenes of terror unfolded before sunrise on Monday in Nigeria's north-western Kebi state. Armed with rifles, assailants scaled the perimeter fence before abducting 25 female students and disappearing. They also shot dead the school's vice-principal in front of his wife. The abductors were very young and had dreadlocks. They surrounded the house, with some of them blocking the windows. They were everywhere, shooting sporadically and killing him in the process. Two students managed to escape the gunmen and have returned safely. A manhunt is on to find the others. Security teams are sweeping nearby forests and have been deployed along major roads in the hopes of giving answers to the students' loved ones. The unfortunate thing has already happened. We see the parents, their children who have been abducted. We give them confidence, we give them our words that we will do everything possible to ensure that their children are being rescued. Mass school abductions are not uncommon in the region, where at least 1,500 students have been kidnapped since 2014. That was the year Boko Haram abducted 276 students from Chibok in Borno State, sparking a global movement to see them returned. Some did, many are still missing. Particularly in Nigeria's north, criminal gangs specialise in kidnappings for ransom and the release of fellow gang members from prison. Lack security measures, tensions between communities and ever fewer resources as a result of climate change are some of the drivers. With no one having yet claimed responsibility for this attack, the task of bringing these girls home is that much harder for investigators.

The House has approved a bill that would require the Justice Department to release files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. The bill, which received bipartisan support, now awaits consideration in the Senate.
