The incident escalated into a day-long standoff after the suspect barricaded himself inside his home and fired at officers, resulting in the officer sustaining non-life-threatening injuries and being released from hospital.

The shooting occurred near two schools and a hospital, prompting lockdowns and shelter-in-place orders for residents. Police said the standoff continued late into the night, with efforts to communicate with the suspect ongoing and measures taken to ensure community safety.

The heavy police presence, a shock in this residential area of Welland, Ontario. A day-long standoff with a suspect barricaded inside his home after a police call turned into a violent confrontation. Shortly after our officers arrived, they were met with gunfire from a male inside that building and one of our officers unfortunately was hit. The female officer was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and was later released. The suspect is contained to that building, okay. That's important because that helps us keep the community safe. The shooting happened near two schools and a hospital. Those were in lockdown for hours and residents were ordered to shelter in place. I'm feeling very anxious, very stressed. It's also developed into irritation. So now I'm irritated. I'm feeling cooped up. I feel kind of like a hostage in my own home. Police say they were responding to assist a bylaw complaint at this church which records say was bought in 2012 and turned into a residence. The city says the property owner had put up an unlawful fence and was illegally digging near sewer infrastructure. I grew up here. I really don't remember people being shot and stuff like that. But I, you know, the scary part is you hope it doesn't become the norm. You know, you always hope, well, I hope it's an isolated thing. I have a seven-month-old at home. So just having this in our city is not what you want to hear, right? And have around your family. The owner of this restaurant says they never thought anything like this could happen. He actually comes and picks up takeout here quite frequently. So we all kind of know him here. We don't like talk to him much. A neighbor told us they could hear police using a loud speaker to try to talk to the suspect. There were also a series of loud noises heard from the area.
