In 1996 the original Winnipeg Jets amid public uproar were relocated, rebranded in Phoenix as the NHL pushed south. This is going to be a very successful venture. Not really. The Yotes bled money for decades and didn't win much. Owners and court cases came and went as the NHL commissioner insisted the team stay in Arizona. Finally, unpaid bills forced a move to a 5,000 seat college arena as the current owner failed to develop a proper NHL rink. When people say is Phoenix a hockey market I'd say it's you know it's kind of hard to know. Phoenix is a major U.S. media market and the NHL wants to be there. It will re-establish the team if the Coyotes owner can get a proposed rink built. Many Coyotes fans are skeptical. There are a lot of fans who are getting screwed over. Winnipeg hockey fans can certainly relate to that but fans of the current Jets they're focused on a playoff run as NHL hockey in Arizona fades into a desert mirage.
