The American Gaming Association anticipates a record-breaking dollar amount wagered during this NFL season.

The start of the NFL season is expected to see American adults legally wager around $30 billion, an increase of 8.5% from the previous year, according to the American Gaming Association. The expansion of legalized sports betting across 39 states and the District of Columbia has led to a significant migration from illegal markets to regulated platforms.

Coinciding with Responsible Gaming Education Month, industry leaders are emphasizing the importance of responsible betting. Initiatives such as haveagameplan.org provide guidelines for bettors, including setting budgets, understanding odds, and maintaining sportsmanship. The industry stresses that betting should be seen as entertainment, not a source of income, and encourages safe, informed participation.

As football season kicks off, American adults are projected to legally wager billions on NFL games during the upcoming season, according to the American Gaming Association. September also marks Responsible Gaming Education Month, so joining us now is Bill Miller, American Gaming Association President and CEO. Good morning, Bill. Good morning, Jessica. Thank you for having me on. Of course. So, what does American Gaming Association's new data tell us about wagers for this upcoming football season? Well, it's no surprise to people that live in Nevada, but since 2018, other states have been able to legalize sports betting, and not surprisingly, Americans like to bet on sports. They're sports fans, and our data shows that for the 2025 NFL season, that around $30 billion is going to be wagered this year, which is about 8.5% more than last year. Wow. Now, what are the latest trends that you're seeing within consumer engagement when it comes to sports betting? Well, I think that what we're seeing is, first of all, importantly, a massive migration from the illegal market, which was predominant in every state except for Nevada, for decades. And so, the legal market and consumers have really embraced legalized sports betting nationally, and now we've got two-thirds of American adults who can legally bet on sports. So, those trends, they are further evidence of really the mainstreaming of American gaming, and the mainstreaming of sports betting, and taking people away from out of the shadows, out of the illegal market, out of the local bookie, and away from the offshore online websites that take your data and your credit card information. And so, what we're really excited about is the continued success of the launch in state after state. We're now 39 states plus the District of Columbia that are legal to bet on sports, and the American public loves it. Yeah, you know, I mentioned earlier Responsible Gaming Education Month, and I feel some of what you said kind of leads into that. What does Responsible Gaming Education Month entail? Well, first of all, it's in September. Responsible Gaming Education Month is September. It coincides with the start of the football season, which is not surprising because it really is a time when there are so many people that are engaged with the NFL. And from our perspective, it's important to remind people about how to best engage with sports betting and gaming in general. But when we were able to have sports betting legalized around the country, we thought it was important to create a PSA campaign called haveagameplan.org. That's our website. That's a site that, you know, for the casual bettor, for the first time bettor, a way for them to engage with our product in a way that they can understand that this is supposed to be fun. It's entertainment. It's not a second job. Although there are some very, very few people that can make a living in sports betting, the vast, vast majority of the individuals, this is fun. And so the five kind of rules of the road for haveagameplan are have a budget, create a budget, stick to the budget, make sure you're doing this socially with friends and with family, make sure you know the rules, make sure you know the odds. And then as you as kind of things go, you know, don't chase your losses. And then importantly, athlete harassment is never OK. And so sportsmanship is really important, both as it relates to online harassment and these sorts of things that we see every now and again. And so it's really, really important for us as an industry to ensure that the public understands we have a DNA or I'm sorry, responsibility is in our DNA. We live responsibility every single day. We're licensed in all of the states in which we operate. And then importantly, the consumer, we want to make sure that the consumer has fun with sports betting and that that comes from understanding a few core principles. Yes.
