New Zealand supermarkets under investigation

New Zealand is in a recession, money is tight for many and more than anywhere that's being felt in the supermarkets. There are just two major grocery companies in New Zealand which control 80% of the market, squeezing consumers and suppliers. Obviously they may only have one or two major supermarkets to sell to, they don't feel like they're able to put their livelihood at risk and they also have to accept the terms that are given from the supermarket. Amid allegations of price gouging and anti-competitive behaviour, last year the government introduced a mandatory code of conduct for the grocery companies. There have been many complaints against supermarkets both here and in Australia, including advertising special discounted prices on products which are later found to be more expensive than the original price, or combo deals on items which are cheaper if bought individually. In Australia two companies have 65% of the market and are being criticised for using inflation as an excuse to keep increasing prices. Neither agreed to be interviewed by Al Jazeera but the government is investigating the industry. We hope that these inquiries will not only encourage supermarkets to do better by consumers but encourage the government to introduce stronger laws and protections for consumers. There's more competition in places like Great Britain and the United States but in the US food prices have increased 25% in the last four years. The New Zealand and Australian markets are smaller and therefore less attractive to foreign companies to enter. It's the consumer that suffers, perhaps now more than ever.
