A new after-school learning center, TUMO Los Angeles, has opened in North Hollywood, providing free access to technology and creative skills training for students aged 12 to 18. The center is part of a global network that began in Armenia in 2011 and now operates 20 centers worldwide.

Funded through public and private partnerships, including grants from the state and local government, TUMO Los Angeles currently has 600 students enrolled and a waitlist of 300 more. The program is open to all teens regardless of prior experience or academic achievement, aiming to give every student a personalized learning experience and prepare them for high-tech careers.

TUMO Los Angeles, a free after-school learning center, is now open. When I visited the TUMO Center it was an emotional experience. You walk into the space and there are hundreds of students working on cutting-edge technology, so computers, but they're completely engrossed in their work and they're doing authentic creative expression and they're learning really valuable skills. Apple, Google, NASA, Facebook. TUMO launched in Armenia in 2011. Since then it has grown internationally. There are 20 centers around the world. Its mission? To give students ages 12 to 18 access to high-tech skills and prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow. Our students are going on to start companies, getting incredibly high-paying jobs in tech and design, and it all starts with just exposure and time at TUMO. Funded through public and private partnerships, the program is completely free. Here in Los Angeles we were extremely fortunate to get grant funding from the state, so actually through the state librarians office, and then through Council District 2 we were able to receive significant funding as well. 600 students are already enrolled, with hundreds more waiting to join. We haven't seen a project that is exactly like TUMO, sort of anywhere in the world, and we haven't seen anything like that in LA. We're completely free. The kind of rigor and the long-term nature of our program leads to some really powerful outcomes for students. This software basis allows us to give every student a unique and personal learning experience. A global idea, now local, empowering young Angelenos to innovate, create, and shape their futures. Our students come to us from all backgrounds and all walks of life, and we celebrate that, and our learning program is designed to accommodate students with a lot of experience and students with zero experience. Spots are filling up fast. There is already a waitlist for 300 students. There is no prerequisite. You don't need to have a certain GPA. You don't even need to have prior experience in any of the skill areas. The goal is to have TUMO centers across the country, and Maria was just asking me if adults can do this. Unfortunately, no. Are there any others in the works right now? Across the country? They're working on it, yes. So stay tuned, but LA is the first one here in the state. Just do one, you get TUMO.
