The materials reveal Tamura experienced significant mental health issues, including depression, insomnia, and migraines reportedly stemming from a high school football concussion. He was twice placed on psychiatric holds, once in 2022 following a suicide threat and again in 2024 after police determined he could harm himself.

Despite these interventions, questions remain about whether Tamura’s mental health history was flagged during background checks for firearm purchases. Investigators are examining why his firearms were not confiscated after these incidents and are also looking into claims Tamura suffered from CTE, a brain injury linked to head trauma, which is being reviewed by the medical examiner.

That resulted in a temporary hold at a mental health facility. At the time, Tamura's mother told police he had insomnia, migraines, and depression resulting from a concussion he got while playing high school football. Remember, in a suicide note, Tamura claimed he suffered from CTE, a brain injury from head trauma, something New York's medical examiner is looking into with an autopsy. Body camera footage also shows Tamura being arrested in a Las Vegas casino for failing to show ID when collecting winnings. My question, why did you not leave him? Just come back tomorrow. I just have to make rent. I understand. They took like six grand from me. You have your money. How am I supposed to cash out? Why didn't you just leave? Because they took all my money. You have your money. No, I don't. Your chip is right there with you. No, they took it. And another psychiatric hold, in 2024, after officers went to his apartment and determined he could harm himself. There was little information on these psychiatric holds, continuing to raise the question if his past behavior raised any flags on a background check when he bought a gun from both a store and an assault rifle from his manager, which two law enforcement officials tell CNN he used in the shootings. Investigators are also looking into why his guns weren't taken away in response to these run-ins with police.
