If you have ever used a dating app and felt addicted like you were compulsively using your phone, unable to stop the swipe, then you're not alone. A new class action lawsuit filed against Match Group, which includes the apps Tinder and Hinge, argues that is intentional. Similar to slot machines, there's something called variable reinforcement. That is, you go a long time without getting the dopamine hit of somebody liking you, and then you suddenly get it. There's a reward on the horizon. What family social worker and addiction specialist Jeff Reynolds is describing is a game-like feel. The suit claims that the app developers intentionally designed it that way to, quote, lock users into a pay-to-play loop. The lawsuit argues the company prioritizes profit over promises to help users find relationships. So that playing element has been there from the get-go. The founders were very open about it being based on a deck of cards. Mia Levitin is author of the book The Future of Seduction and has studied dating apps. It's hacking a very human need for validation, right? So you go on an app, that kind of ding of, oh, somebody likes me, somebody finds me attractive, is a very heady, addictive feeling. Levitin compares the lawsuit to the litigation brought against Big Tobacco. I think dating apps are definitely addictive and harmful. Does that mean that we should be kind of arguing for a nanny state and litigating against the companies that are, you know, at the end of the day, commercial enterprises? I'm not sure. The reality is, you know, the more folks can find ways to limit and govern their own behavior, set some daily limits, there's technology available on every phone to minimize and measure and track your screen time. You know, folks would do well to be mindful of that and just keep in mind how you're spending your time.
