Nearly two-thirds of Americans now disapprove of his handling of inflation, the highest level of disapproval on this issue since he took office. The poll also shows that more than six in ten Americans believe the administration is focusing too much on tariffs, while seven in ten feel the president is not doing enough to lower prices. Despite White House claims that core inflation remains steady and retail sales are healthy, the cost of common goods has risen over the past year, raising concerns among business owners and consumers. Additionally, support for Trump's immigration policies has declined, particularly among Hispanic Americans, due to perceptions of increased deportations and concerns over detention practices.

President Trump just passed the six-month mark in his second term and a new CBS News poll finds his approval rating has fallen from 53% in February to 42% now. Independents are driving the decline. Approval among Republicans remains strong at 89%, Democrats just 5%. And support for his deportation of immigrants in the country illegally has dropped 10 points since February to 49%. But again, a huge split by party with 91% of Republicans approving and only 14% of Democrats. As for the economy, the issue that helped get Mr. Trump re-elected, Ed O'Keefe has been looking into that. Ed? Good evening. Those slipping approval numbers are warning signs for the president. While his base of support is standing by him, the broader coalition that elected him is concerned with how he's handling just about everything else, especially higher costs. More than six in ten Americans say the Trump administration is focusing too much on tariffs that are set to take effect next month on imported goods, while seven in ten say the president isn't focused enough on lowering prices. The president continues to insist the economy is in great shape. The economy is roaring, business confidence is soaring, incomes are up, prices are down, and inflation is dead. It's dead. The White House points out core inflation, the price of everything but food and energy, has held steady at about two percent and retail sales remain healthy. But the cost of common goods like beef and a pound of coffee have increased over the last year. Given the fact that prices haven't gone down, what are you worried about going forward? We're very concerned about our business slowing down. We've already seen the foot traffic in our tasting room slow down a bit. There's a lot of people that depend on this business for their household income, and we have to do everything we can to protect that. And the immigration numbers jumped out at both of us here. The president's numbers beyond and below water, underwater as we call it. What's behind that? What's going on there? Well, first of all, Americans believe he's deporting more people than they anticipated. He's not prioritizing violent criminals as he promised as a candidate. And there's concerns about how detention facilities are being used to house people before they're removed. There's also slippage for the president on the issue of immigration among Hispanic Americans, in part because they believe they're being unfairly targeted.
