Europe's Eurovision Song Contest is infamous for its over-the-top musical performances and the controversy surrounding participants and winners. Banned from the event since its invasion of Ukraine, Russia is now hosting its own, globally aligned show, called Intervision.

Russia has hosted the Intervision Song Contest in Moscow as an alternative to Eurovision, following its ban from the European competition due to the war in Ukraine. The revived event brought together performers from more than 20 countries, including India, Brazil, South Africa, and Vietnam, representing regions such as Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Commonwealth of Independent States.

The contest, which originally took place during the Soviet era, was reintroduced to showcase musical talent from countries considered friendly to Russia. Despite the absence of the United States representative, the event concluded with Vietnam winning the top prize. Russian officials expressed confidence that Intervision will grow in prominence and continue as an annual event.

Together the participating countries account for more than half the world's population. A fact the Kremlin was keen to stress in a less colourful, pre-event news conference. In addition to Russia, there are representatives of the CIS, BRICS, SCO, Africa, Asia, Latin America and one representative from Europe and one from the US. Intervision isn't actually completely new. Back in the Soviet era it was a music contest that Moscow staged with its Eastern European satellite states. After being banned from Eurovision over the war in Ukraine, the Kremlin decided to revive the competition, handing the microphone to countries Russia considers friendly. As for the relationship between China and Russia and our friendship, we have always been friends and now we are like a family. High praise too from other contestants. The fact is that we're here with all of you. We're very happy, very grateful, very glad and immersed into what is a new experience for us. This is a powerful event. In the end, the US representative didn't participate. But Intervision convinced its viewers. President Putin says it will happen again. I'm confident that the contest will become one of the most recognisable and beloved events in the world. In the Saturday night finale, Vietnam came up top, a victory worth $360,000. And while it may take some time for the Intervision Song Contest to reach the global fame the Kremlin's after, it has a committed fan base already. And Russia has told the world once again that it doesn't need the West.
