Morocco's finance ministry has presented a draft budget for 2026 totaling over 760 billion dirhams, marking a 5.5% rise from the previous year. The government plans to allocate 140 billion dirhams to health and education, representing a 16% increase in funding for these sectors. 

The budget proposal includes the creation of 27,000 new public sector jobs in health and education, and aims to reduce regional inequalities. These measures follow recent nationwide protests over the state of public services, with demonstrators criticizing government spending priorities ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The government expects economic growth to slightly slow to 4.6% next year, from 4.8% in 2025. Morocco will allocate 140 billion dirhams, or $15 billion, to health and education in the 2026 budget, a 16% increase compared to last year. In a statement after a cabinet meeting on Sunday, the office of King Mohammed VI said the kingdom would create 27,000 public sector jobs in these two areas. Authorities also said next year's budget plan is designed to reduce inequalities between regions. These measures come on the back of weeks of demonstrations across the country. A Genzi-led protest movement erupted in September over struggling health care and education services. Protesters criticised the government for spending money on sports infrastructure ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, rather than on neglected public sectors.
