More women are breaking barriers in Southern Nevada’s trade industry, gaining stability, skills, and opportunities on major projects.

Southern Nevada is experiencing a notable increase in women entering skilled trades, traditionally male-dominated fields. Local women are taking on roles as plumbers, electricians, and operating engineers, with some working on major projects like the new A's Stadium and airport developments.

According to the Southern Nevada Building Trades Union, the percentage of female trade apprentices in the region has grown from 2% in 2019 to nearly 9%. This growth makes women the fastest-growing group in the local trade labor sector. Industry experts expect opportunities in the trades to continue expanding as large construction projects progress.

But here in the Valley, that story is getting a rewrite, and our community is leading the charge. More local women are stepping up, joining the skilled labor industry, and building a future. Our Consumer Reporter Shakira Hawkins spoke with two of them to see how they're forging new paths and encouraging others to join in. From plumbers to electricians and operating engineers, local women are breaking stereotypes in trade jobs. And right now, project managers in Las Vegas say that they need workers more than ever. When a woman is on site, we just kind of like, I see you girl. Today was my first day on a new job site. 31-year-old Raquel Dominguez and 35-year-old Demi Colbar are part of the growing number of women breaking into Southern Nevada's trade industry. I went ahead and applied as an apprentice. I got called a year later and here I am, working on a major project, so that's really exciting. Dominguez is now an operating engineer on the new A's Stadium under construction on Las Vegas Strip. Colbar, an electrician, is working on a project near the airport. Both say the work has been life-changing. And as a first-generation Latina, come on, like, I'm so emotional about the idea that one day I get to point out at that stadium saying, like, I worked on that. And they're not alone. In 2019, women made up just 2% of trade apprentices in Southern Nevada. Today, they make up nearly 9%, making women the fastest-growing demographic in the local trade labor industry. That's according to the Southern Nevada Building Trades Union. Just because I'm a woman doesn't mean that I'm not capable. I'm 5 feet, 110 pounds. And with major projects like the A's Ballpark, Brightline, and the Convention Center expansion, the opportunities are endless. Experts tell me that trade jobs will continue to grow.
