More National Guard troops are heading soon to Washington, D.C., and they are preparing to start carrying weapons in the coming days, officials say, a major shift that comes days after President Trump said he was deploying them to “take back” the capital from what he described as violent criminals.

National Guard troops from West Virginia, South Carolina, and Ohio are set to deploy to Washington, DC, at the request of the Trump administration. The troops, who may be armed but will not be making arrests, are joining an increased federal law enforcement presence in the city. 

Law enforcement recently made dozens of arrests and seized illegal firearms, with deployments intended to cover all areas of the city. While some residents support the increased federal involvement for safety, others question the long-term impact. The specific reasons for bringing in troops from other states remain unclear, but White House officials state that the roles of the troops are not expected to change.

Fox 5 Sidney Persing joins us live from Union Station tonight. Hey Sidney. Hey Katie, so those troops from across the country, they could arrive here in DC at any minute. Now White House officials tell me that troops still are not going to be making arrests, but they could be armed. This all comes as there are still so many questions going into next week about what policing here in the district will look like. Troops stood on guard at Union Station Sunday and soon. Hundreds more will deploy to the Capitol now from West Virginia, South Carolina and Ohio. Every state has a different culture in their National Guard, and that's what I'm very worried about. Those states say their deployments come at the request of the Trump administration. Jacob Adams called it alarming. As much of an escalation as this was, that's going to be even bigger escalation. As President Trump moves to exercise even tighter control of the district, White House officials told Fox 5 Sunday that on Saturday alone law enforcement made 68 arrests and seized more than 15 illegal firearms. I think it's a good thing because it actually reinforces the fact that America is secure, safe, stable. Elliot Reid says he supports the federal involvement. As a moderate as a centrist, I think something needs to be done. I have three kids. I'm about to start teaching next week. I want it to be safe. Federal agents were seen all across the district all week. In popular areas like Georgetown and you Street. When asked if they'll also focus in on neighborhoods with higher crime rates like Ward 7 and 8, here's what the US Marshal Service Director told Fox 5 in an exclusive interview. The deployment is going to be citywide. There's going to be no part of the city that doesn't have law enforcement Monday through Thursday. They was out here, but I haven't seen him for the last two days, which is Friday and Saturday. Ward 8 resident Gregory Green said he thinks the feds might help his neighborhood now, but not long term. But then FBI agents and stuff. They stopping it. They stopping it for right now. When they leave, it's going to start right back up. People are going to be scared of FBI. They ain't trying to mess with the FBI. And Katie DC's own National Guard has had a fairly limited role in this federal intervention, so it's not exactly clear yet why the Trump administration wants more troops from other parts of the country. But White House officials do tell me tonight that their roles are not expected to change.

Hamas on Monday informed mediators that it had accepted a ceasefire deal proposal submitted to it the day before, according to international and Israeli outlets.
