Since a new distribution system began, over 1,300 Palestinians have reportedly been killed while seeking food, according to the United Nations. Despite recent steps by Israel to allow more aid into Gaza, including temporary pauses in fighting, many trucks have reportedly been looted before reaching those most in need.

At the Egyptian border, dozens of trucks carrying aid roll towards Gaza. The small amount of humanitarian supplies are far from adequate to serve the strip's population as more and more people die of starvation. But even after the aid enters the territory, many have trouble accessing it, particularly orphaned children or widows, like at this Israeli-run distribution hub in Gaza's north. I go to collect aid and risk my life to bring flour for my mother and siblings. I also collect cardboard. My husband's paralyzed and there are widows and women like me who can't secure food for their children. Some young men take the aid and sell it at high prices. I am helpless and cannot afford to buy it. Many here are demanding a return to a system where aid was sent to warehouses and then text messages informed families to collect their share. Since May 26, a US and Israel-backed organization called the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation has distributed the bulk of the aid allowed into the strip. In that time, more than 1,300 Palestinians have been killed while seeking food, over 850 in the vicinity of GHF sites, according to the United Nations. It's a risk many are willing to take, like this man who said he was wounded. I came to get aid, but today wasn't my day. I hope God provides next time, even though I was injured. Amid international outcry, Israel announced steps last week to let more aid reach the population, including brief pauses in fighting in some areas. Gaza's media office says that nearly 1,600 aid trucks have arrived since Israel eased restrictions, though witnesses and Hamas sources say many of those were looted by desperate civilians and armed gangs.
