Aid workers call it one of the world’s deepest education and protection crises. Millions of children are growing up without an education, trapped between poverty and displacement.

The ongoing civil war in Syria has forced millions of children out of school, with many now working to help support their families. Economic hardship, destroyed infrastructure, and the high costs associated with schooling have contributed to a sharp rise in child labor across the country. 

Nearly 2.5 million children are currently out of school, and an estimated 7.5 million require humanitarian assistance. Efforts to rehabilitate schools and launch educational campaigns are underway, but challenges such as overcrowded classrooms, lack of electricity, and trauma among children persist. The quality of education remains a concern as many teachers and families have been displaced, leaving a generation of Syrian children facing significant barriers to learning.

Many teenagers spend time texting on their phones. Allah does not own a phone, and even if he did, he cannot read or write. Born two years into Syria's civil war, the 13-year-old has never been to school. For $4 a week, Allah works long days and hopes he'll become a welder. Unlike him, 11-year-old Majid did go to school, but not anymore. His family moved back to Aleppo from Idlib, and now his father says he can't afford to send him to school. Now making fiberglass auto parts is full-time work. I got a certificate of high achievement when I completed the fourth grade. I want to become an engineer. Life was better where we used to live. Here, we don't have time or space away from work. At school, I used to play with my classmates. Child labor seems to be rising here as a coping mechanism to help families survive. Every street in Syria's industrial hub is full of children who cannot go to school. Many families instead need children to work to help with household income. Others can't afford costs related to schooling, like uniforms, materials or transportation. After 14 years of a devastating war and destroyed infrastructure, nearly 2 million children are at risk of malnourishment. Nearly 2.5 million are out of school, and an estimated 7.5 million require humanitarian assistance. This is Douma, on the outskirts of Damascus. All over Syria, schools are destroyed, damaged, or are being used as shelters for displaced people. Funding shortfalls make matters worse, in addition to access in some areas blocked by instability, damaged roads, and governance issues. We have rehabilitated around 800 schools, reinstated dismissed teachers, and preparing classrooms and recruiting teachers. We've launched initiatives such as the Back to School campaigns. Many children suffer trauma and mental health issues, but that's not a priority. Those who make it to school face overcrowding and no electricity in classrooms. I hope that no more than three students use one desk, and there are fewer students in my classroom so that we can feel comfortable. The desks are small and crowded, which makes me uncomfortable. Four or five of us use one desk. Millions of displaced Syrians include teachers and families, so now the quality of education is also a concern. This year I have 69 students in my class. It's higher than last year, but ideally it should be 30. I'm dedicating all my time, and it's stressful to fill the gaps. For students like Majid, those gaps are so wide that he can only wish to go to school. Another Syrian generation suffering from war, even after most of the conflict is over.
