At the end of Thursday's meeting, a seven-person body will either recommend the San Diego City Council approve or deny the project. If approved, Midway Rising could break ground next year.

The San Diego Planning Commission has unanimously recommended the Midway Rising redevelopment plan for the Pechanga Arena site. The proposal includes a new 16,000-seat multi-purpose entertainment center, more than 4,000 housing units—about half of which will be affordable—and new parks and open spaces. 

Local residents expressed mixed reactions, with some concerned about the lack of certain recreational facilities and potential traffic issues. The commission's approval is contingent upon transit improvements being implemented in the project's first phase. The plan is expected to be built over two phases spanning ten years and will next be considered by the City Council.

All were on board for San Diego's Sports Arena area to get a brand new look, specifically the Midway Rising design. More than 4,000 housing units would be stacked throughout the plazas, with about half of them being capped at affordable rates. Parks and open space fill the in-between spots, and at the end, a totally new version of the Pechanga Arena that stands there today. The design gaining mixed reactions from locals. We can see that it doesn't have enough park space because there's no soccer fields, no baseball. I don't see any areas for skateboarding, just golf. I think that it's nice. I just think it's very, like, it'd be very packed all the time. And I feel like I'd like that, though. I feel like a lot of people would just come to Point Loma. I feel like, yeah, it's also like right next to the highway. I don't know if I'd want to live right here, but I think it'd be nice for more people to have opportunities to live here. In Thursday's Planning Commission meeting, the main concern from residents was if it would make traffic in the area even worse. You're talking about overflow parking lots and shuttles. We have seen for the last five years the abject failure of any plan that involves public transit or bicycle lanes. The plan was passed with the condition that transit improvements be implemented in phase one of the project. It's expected to be built over 10 years with two separate phases. I like it. It just looked a lot more different than just an empty parking lot here, and then it just be very enjoyable to see. The project will go before City Council later this year in the Midway District.
