Many airlines have stopped flying over the Gulf region, following safety recommendations, and are now using crowded alternative routes. Airlines such as Air China, which can fly over Russian airspace, have gained a competitive advantage with faster and cheaper routes. The industry continues to adapt by cancelling routes and adjusting operations in response to the prolonged instability.

There's the ongoing financial stress as the price of jet fuel continues to rise. Then there's the organizational setback due to safety concerns. In the hours after the US and Israel began striking Iran, flights were cancelled and then air traffic ground to a halt. While some routes have picked up again, they're only a small faction of pre-war levels. In Abu Dhabi and Dubai's airports, traffic is three times less than what it was. In Doha, it's often even worse. Many planes that aren't cancelled are also flying with fewer travellers, as tourism and business in the Middle East has plunged. And it's not just travel to and from Gulf states that's been affected. The region's airports were, until the war, major hubs for travel between Europe and Asia. Many airlines, following the recommendation of the European Union's Aviation Safety Agency, no longer fly over the Gulf. Over 20 nations are now on a safety concern list because of conflict. This has made pilots use a narrow corridor over Armenia and Azerbaijan, and it's now increasingly crowded. The safety concerns have also given an advantage to airlines like Air China, which has permission from Moscow to fly over Russian territory, making their routes faster and thus cheaper. Be it because of safety, the cost of jet fuel or drops in tourism, airlines are adapting. Many have cancelled multiple routes, and often for months to come.
