Mexico, Chile and Uruguay have halted poultry imports from Brazil after the country confirmed its first bird flu outbreak on a commercial farm, authorities said Saturday.

The affected farm has already been depopulated, and officials stated that the infection control process is underway.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock reported the detection of the bird flu case and subsequently declared an animal health emergency. The ministry reassured that the Brazilian veterinary service has been equipped to manage such diseases since the early 2000s. It also emphasized that there is no evidence to suggest avian influenza is transmitted through poultry meat or eggs.

In response to the outbreak, major trading partners, including China and the European Union, have implemented a 60-day suspension on Brazilian chicken imports. Brazil is recognized as the world’s largest chicken exporter, and the incident is expected to have significant effects on global poultry markets.

It also stated that consumers can rest assured that the disease is not transmitted through the consumption of poultry meat or eggs. But major export partners like China and the EU have already reacted, imposing a 60-day ban on Brazilian chicken imports. The new outbreak of the avian flu will have an important repercussion in global markets, as Brazil is the world's largest exporter of chickens.
