Following the completion of tunnelling, the next phases include track laying, station construction, and extensive testing. The $25 billion project, described as Australia’s largest public transport initiative, is scheduled to begin operations in 2032, promising significant reductions in travel times across Sydney.

Deep below Darling Harbour, Metro West is making waves. The future of Sydney's public transport network slowly taking shape. The big dig is almost done, with boring machines on the brink of a breakthrough, 97% complete. 700 metres to go now. Light at the end of the tunnel as a crucial connection inches closer, linking Westmead to the city. The two biggest employment centres in the state, in Parramatta CBD and Sydney CBD, are connected with a world-class metro. It's a quantum leap in travel time when it comes to east-west connections. When tunnelling finishes, this project will really pick up the pace. The next step, track laying, station construction, then extensive testing. Over thousands and thousands of hours before this project will be able to throw open the doors to the public. But it's still several years away, Metro West isn't scheduled to start operating until 2032. It's a $25 billion project, it's the largest public transport project in Australia, it's completely transformative. If we could make it go quicker, we absolutely would. So the commute, for now, stays on the surface, while work underground is full steam ahead. John Paul Gonzo, 10 News.
