The Metro is shaping up to be one of the big debates for the 2026 New South Wales state election, with both the Premier and Opposition Leader fronting media to plug their progress — or lack thereof — on new projects.

The New South Wales Premier has been making frequent visits to Metro construction sites, announcing that the South West Metro is now two-thirds complete. The government is currently building 25 additional Metro stations, focusing on completing projects initiated by the previous coalition government. 

The opposition has criticised the Premier for not committing to new Metro lines, with the Liberal leader positioning future Metro expansion as a central issue for the next state election. While the coalition previously promised significant investment in business cases for new lines, details on funding remain unclear. The Premier continues to provide progress updates but has not confirmed an exact opening date for the South West Metro. The existing City Metro, which has carried 67 million passengers, is experiencing high demand, and its future expansion will be a decision for subsequent governments.

They have to explain how they're going to pay for these things. No detail on that either. While the Premier wants to keep the public updated with regular progress reports on the state of the South West Metro, it does expose one pitfall though and that is he still can't say when it will open in 2026. It will eventually connect to the City Metro at Sydenham, which celebrates its first birthday tomorrow. Having carried 67 million passengers, its popularity is presenting as packed carriages.
