Meta-owned Facebook and Instagram were back up after a more than two-hour outage that was caused by a technical issue and impacted hundreds of thousands of users globally. The disruptions started at around 10 a.m. ET (1500 GMT), with many users saying on rival social media platform X they had been booted out of Facebook and Instagram and were unable to log in.

The service interruption began around 10 a.m. ET (1500 GMT), negatively affecting the accessibility of these platforms for potentially hundreds of thousands of users worldwide. Reports of the outage proliferated on the competing social media service X, with numerous individuals noting they had been forcibly logged out of Facebook and Instagram and were subsequently unable to regain access.

Trackers registered more than half a million disruptions to Facebook and nearly 100,000 to Instagram a tiny fraction of the nearly 3.2 billion people per day who use Meta's apps which also include WhatsApp and threads. Tuesday's outage paled in comparison to 2021 when a crash took Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram offline for more than 3 billion users over more than six hours.
