During the sentencing hearing, it was revealed that Dang has since been diagnosed with Level 2 autism and has a history of social isolation and bullying. A psychiatrist testified that Dang requires therapy to learn social cues, but such support is not available in custody. The sentencing judgment is scheduled to be delivered in February.

In an attack, Crown Prosecutor Sloan told the court was unprovoked, uncalled for and unjustified. Jackie Dang Senior confronted by chaos. I see nothing. Only see my family on the ground. It was the day before Dang was due to graduate from his university degree in May last year. However, he'd withdrawn from his studies a year earlier after failing a subject and struggled to tell his family. I wasn't really thinking about attacking my mother or brother, Dang said. It must have been a spur-of-the-moment decision. I had no fixed plan. Maybe I was going to stab myself. I don't really know. In today's sentencing hearing, the district court heard Dang has since been diagnosed with Level 2 autism. He very rarely had any friends or never had friends and was frequently bullied at school. He prefers to isolate by himself and stay out of trouble. The psychiatrist argued his lack of emotion resulted in an inability to generate alternative solutions to his predicament, his dilemma. The psychiatrist said Dang needs therapy to learn social cues and prevent a future catastrophe, support that isn't available in custody. Dang's mother sobbed throughout the hearing. Dang's defence called it an unfortunate and tragic situation. His mother, a victim, but still supports her son. And is this a hard day for you, madam?
