A 32-year-old Glendale man is behind bars, accused of making threats toward Jewish people.

A 32-year-old man from Glendale has been charged with making terroristic threats and computer tampering after allegedly targeting synagogues and making threats against Jewish people. During his court appearance, prosecutors requested a $1 million cash bond, citing concerns for the safety of the Jewish community and noting the suspect’s prior actions and possible mental health issues.

Arizona is recognized for its legislative efforts to combat anti-Semitism, though incidents have risen sharply in recent years. Local Jewish leaders acknowledged the challenges posed by anti-Semitism but also emphasized the support and acceptance experienced within the broader community. The accused apologized in court, and his next hearing is scheduled.

And vandalism and threats at a Valley Synagogue see the suspect in court today. That man is behind bars tonight accused of targeting Valley Synagogues and making terroristic threats against Jewish people. Plus, it's apparently not the first time. Fox 10's Taylor Wurst joins us in studio with the details including video from his court appearance today. Taylor. Ashley and Brian, 32-year-old Kevin Piles is from Glendale and charged with one count of making terroristic threats and one count of computer tampering used to threaten, both of which are felonies. We don't know yet the specifics of what he did, but according to statements during Piles initial appearance in court today, it started as early as April 21st of this year. And before any of this, the state says a detective investigating the case told them Piles had previously gone on to a synagogue property. The state asked for a $1 million cash bond, saying it has great concerns for the safety of the community and the Jewish community in particular for a number of reasons. The state says Piles appears to have hate towards the Jewish faith and possibly some mental health concerns. It also came up in court today that Piles has access to weapons and has taken proactive steps to go to synagogues and express hate. Now Arizona is one of only nine states that the Anti- Defamation League says are currently leading the way in combating anti-Semitism through meaningful legislative action. The ADL judged this by evaluating states based on 22 criteria grouped into three categories that includes prioritization, education and protection. ADL says it documented a staggering increase in anti-Semitic incidents in the U.S. They've gone up 344% in the last five years. I spoke with Rabbi Shmueli Yanklowicz with Arizona Jews for Justice tonight. He told me being Jewish isn't always easy here, but he ultimately feels Arizona has made great strides in its acceptance. On the one hand, anti-Semitism is skyrocketing. It's coming from the extreme right. It's coming from the extreme left and from some other places. And on the other hand, we're experiencing so much love as well. We have a pantry that serves low income people. We have humanitarian buses that serve in the street. And so we're dealing on the front lines with diverse populations every day. And so we experienced both some of that hate out there and we experienced just a lot of support from the community. And I think Arizona has been a really safe and terrific place to live and to build a Jewish community. At his hearing today, Kevin Piles apologized repeatedly to the judge and said he missed his family. His next court date is August 24th. Ashley.
