CNBC’s Kate Rogers breaks down new data from the National Federation of Independent Business on usage of artificial intelligence on Main Street.

A recent survey by the National Federation of Independent Business found that just 24 percent of small business owners are currently using artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT, Canva, and Copilot. The majority of small businesses have yet to adopt AI, and those that have report minimal impact on their workforce numbers.

The survey also highlighted that AI adoption is more common in larger small businesses, with nearly half of firms with 50 or more employees using the technology, compared to 21 percent among businesses with fewer staff. Business owners report that AI is helping to streamline operations and level the playing field, but it is not replacing jobs.

Main Street meets AI

Small businesses are starting to make use of artificial intelligence, but Main Street has a long way to go. That's according to a new Small Business and Technology Survey from the National Federation of Independent Business. The nationwide survey of over 500 small businesses found that only 24 percent of owners said they're using AI, including ChatGPT, Canva and Copilot in some capacity, compared to 76 percent who are not. But most notable, AI isn't taking away jobs at small businesses. Nearly all using it said AI has so far not impacted the number of employees at their firm. We spoke with boutique law firm Lynn Pinker Hurst and Schwegman's partner, Chris Schwegman, who said AI platform Harvey is resolving work in days that would sometimes take weeks and said the technology isn't replacing workers at the firm either. One of the things Harvey lets us do is review, understand and incorporate and respond much faster than we would prior to the use of these kinds of AI tools. In other words, it evens the playing field. No longer does a party have an advantage because they can paper you to death. The NFIB survey found AI use varied widely based on the size of the small business. For firms with employees in the single digits, uptake was at 21 percent. At firms with 50 or more workers, AI implementation was at nearly half of all respondents, with those numbers sure to climb in the months and years to come.
