Featuring works by more than 50 artists, the exhibition reflects on five decades of democratic transition in Portugal and Spain, many of which are rarely seen by the public.

The exhibition explores the shift from fascist regimes to contemporary democracies, inviting visitors to consider the ongoing importance of defending democratic values. Through a visual narrative that includes historical references and contemporary perspectives, the project links themes of dissent, resistance, and freedom to current challenges facing both countries. The exhibition is scheduled to run until March next year.

The Montemadrid Foundation and the Commission for the Commemoration of 50 Years of Spain in Freedom are presenting an exhibition at the Casa Encendida in Madrid, with works by more than 50 artists reflecting on the 50 years of democratic transition in Portugal and Spain. The Casa Encendida and the Montemadrid Foundation have a collection that many of the works are unknown to most of the public and we thought it was a very good opportunity, from a contemporary perspective, to put them at the disposal of the public, who usually cannot see them. The project invites a dialogue on the social, political and cultural aspects of the transition and confrontation between Iberian dictatorships and contemporary democratic regimes. The exhibition aims to get people to think about what were the fascist regimes in Portugal and Spain, how certain fascist parties are reaching the Spanish and Portuguese parliaments and how these values ​​have to be defended. That's why we have the voices of Salazar in this exhibition, we have evocations of Franco, we have a first room that talks a little about the dictatorships and the royal dynasties. Imbued with memory, political criticism and social commitment, the exhibition presents a visual narrative that links dissent, resistance and freedom to the current challenges facing our democracies. We have works that date back to the 1970s or even further back to point out this connection that we have with artists to society itself and the choice had a lot to do with that, that is, to leave this proposal open, to question, to provoke what is a society under construction. The exhibition will run until March next year.
