A significant severe weather threat is being monitored in Iowa, particularly from late afternoon into the evening. Storms are forecast to develop near Kansas City and move northeast into Iowa, bringing risks of large hail, strong winds, and potentially long-track tornadoes.

The severe weather risk will also extend into northwestern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. Earlier heavy rain in Iowa is moving out, and clearing skies to the southwest may further destabilize the atmosphere, increasing the likelihood of severe storms later in the day.

Good afternoon from Davenport, Iowa, where we are tracking a significant severe weather threat this afternoon into the evening hours here in Iowa. We're watching for storms to develop later this afternoon down near Kansas City before eventually moving to the northeast here into Iowa, where an all-severe hazards risk will set up. And these supercells, if they move into this area, will be capable of large damaging hail, strong winds, and even long-track tornadoes. Now, these storms will likely be moving quite quickly across the Midwest here later this afternoon. They'll move through Iowa and then move into northwestern Illinois and southern Wisconsin, again, posing that risk for those all hazards. But we'll be tracking the storms here live in Iowa this afternoon, starting here in the next few hours, watching for those storms to develop in an open, clear area off to the southwest of this location here in Davenport, Iowa. We've had rain, real heavy rain, this morning across Iowa off to the west and northwest towards Des Moines. I spent the night near Marshalltown, Iowa last night. We had heavy rain last night and then all this morning. But that rain is starting to move out of the area here. You can see sun starting to poke through here, starting to clear up a little bit here. But it's definitely much clearer down to the southwest, and that is going to aid in the destabilization of the environment here to bring that juice, that warmth, that heat from the sun will help destabilize things and make the potential for those storms later this afternoon.
