Las Vegas nonprofits are responding to anticipated delays in SNAP benefits by distributing emergency food boxes to families in need. The nonprofit Vegas Helps is leading the effort, providing over $20,000 worth of pre-packaged food boxes containing pantry staples and fresh items to SNAP-eligible families.

Registration for the food boxes is available until Sunday at 5 p.m. through VegasFoodBoxes.com. Community donations have nearly doubled the initial funding, and organizers say that every $10 donation goes directly to providing food, with the potential to expand the program as more funds are raised.

SNAP benefits are expected to be delayed Saturday but tonight the community is stepping up. I'm here at the aftermarket in Northeast Las Vegas where kids are getting a hot meal before trick-or-treating and earlier I spoke with a nonprofit who's making sure families have food during this tough time. Starting Monday the nonprofit Vegas Helps will begin distributing more than $20,000 worth of pre-packaged food boxes to SNAP eligible families across the The program called VegasFoodBoxes.com is meant to help families who may see a delay and their benefits because of the government shutdown. Each box includes pantry staples like pasta, macaroni and cheese, rice, bread and even fresh items like apples. Registration is open right now and families have until Sunday at 5 p.m. to sign up. I caught up with founder Justin Wu out of Costco as he stocked up for the first round of boxes. He says more than 200 families signed up just in the first day. So far you know we started with $10,000 of funds to do this and we had a lot of people in the community step up we're almost at $20,000 now so you can also visit the site VegasHelps.com and donate as little as $10 that you go to this program and as we accumulate more money that's another box for the community. If you already signed up families who qualify will get pickup details directly from the nonprofit and as more donations come in Vegas helps says that it plans to extend and feed even more families. Justin Wu tells me even a $10 donation can provide a food box for a family and 100% of the money goes straight to food.
