Bradley John Murdoch, who was convicted for the 2001 murder of British tourist Peter Falconeo and the attempted abduction of Joanne Lees, has died after being moved to palliative care in Alice Springs. Murdoch, who was serving a minimum 28-year sentence, was diagnosed with terminal throat cancer in 2019 and his health deteriorated recently, leading to his release from prison for end-of-life care.

Despite appeals and offers of improved prison conditions, Murdoch never cooperated with police or revealed the location of Falconeo's remains. His death leaves Falconeo's family and Joanne Lees without the answers they have long sought. Authorities have now posted a $500,000 reward in hopes that someone else may come forward with information.

This is the moment Bradley John Murdoch was taken into custody outside Adelaide Supreme Court in 2003. Detectives pounced seconds after Murdoch was acquitted of the rape of a 12-year-old girl. He wouldn't see the outside of a jail again until his recent transference to palliative care in Alice Springs. Murdoch was taken to Darwin and tried for the murder of British tourist Peter Falconeo at attempted abduction of his girlfriend Joanne Lees in 2001. He stopped the pair's combi van near Barrow Creek on the Stuart Highway in the Northern Territory, lured Mr Falconeo to the rear of the van and shot him, then bound Ms Lees and threw her in the tray of his four-wheel drive. She managed to escape. I've asked the police to tell me only positive news and remain hopeful of Pete being found. Murdoch, a self-confessed drug runner, was identified as the driver of the vehicle. His DNA was found on Ms Lees' shirt. The cable ties used to handcuff her and in the van. He was convicted in 2005. We are pleased with the verdict. However, this will not bring Peter back. And sentenced to a minimum 28 years in jail. It must have been close to the worst nightmare imaginable. Unlike you, Ms Lees displayed considerable courage. And Murdoch never summoned the courage to engage with police, much less reveal the final resting place of the tourist he murdered. I would like Bradley John Murdoch to seriously consider telling me, Joanne and Luciana and Pete's brothers, what he has done with Pete. Murdoch unsuccessfully appealed his conviction, and offers of improved prison conditions failed to encourage him to cooperate with police. He was diagnosed with terminal throat cancer in 2019. Despite chemotherapy, his condition deteriorated this year. That triggered his release into palliative care at Alice Springs Hospital and allowed for excursions in his dying days. Murdoch's family released a photo and statement today describing him as a generous spirit, a gentle giant with a heart of gold. The chief investigator in the Falconeo case says he was a narcissist and she's certain of his guilt. And we have to remember that Bradley Murdoch was someone who had a tendency to turn to violence as a way of dealing with things. He carried weapons and he was in the area at the time. A hoped-for deathbed confession never came. A $500,000 reward now posted in the hopes someone else might help. Murdoch hasn't engaged with us. So, look, there may be someone out there that he's confided in, whether or not that's family or friends, we just don't know. Murdoch's death will provide little closure for the family of Peter Falconeo or the woman who escaped death in the desert that day. I'll never be fully at peace if Pete's not found.
