The Rwandan capital Kigali will from Sunday host some of the biggest names in cycling, including the men’s and women’s Tour de France winners, for the first staging in Africa of the UCI road world championships.

Cyclists will complete the demanding circuit 15 times, covering a total distance of 267 kilometers and finishing at the city's convention center.

Local cyclists have tested the route, describing it as one of the toughest in the competition's history. The challenging terrain and enthusiastic local support are expected to make this a memorable championship for both participants and spectators.

After a quick briefing, the group sets off. Kigali's rolling hills are stunning to look at, but brutal on the legs. The men's elite race will feature two particularly gruelling challenges, the ascent of the gulf and the punishing cobblestone climb of Kimi Uruga. It keeps going and going. I'm definitely feeling warm. I mean, a spicy climb. I haven't done actually the full cobblestone road before until this morning, and it's tough. On race day, riders will take on the circuit 15 times. Coming up at one time, I'm like, I think that's enough, yeah. There's everything from a nice gentle climb. We're going to go on a nice gentle climb now, to the classic just wall, anything that a cyclist wants. During the competition, riders will cover 267 kilometers in total, finishing at Kigali's convention center, the city's iconic landmark. Once off the bikes, it's time to take stock. I was like, this is going to be a nice, fun, chill ride, and I'm a little toasted. The verdict is unanimous, this route is made for champions. We'll be out there, we'll be watching, for sure. These cycling fans won't miss a second of it.
