That's Kathy Bates as the star of CBS's Matlock, and she is also, at the age of 77, making Emmy's history as the oldest actress to be nominated for the category of Lead Actress in a Drama Series. The most exciting night in television airs here on CBS and Paramount Plus this Sunday. The top nominated shows this year are Severance with 27 nods, The Penguin with 24, both The Studio and The White Lotus come in with 23. And Emily Longoretta joins us now. She is the Senior TV Features Editor for Variety. Emily, thanks so much for being with us to talk about this very fun night, the best drama category in particular, jam-packed this year. We got The Pit, we got Severance, The Last of Us, among many others. What show, which show do you see coming out on top? You know, I think a lot of people are looking at Severance and The Pit as the two big dramas to watch this year. Well, of course, Kathy Bates is likely to be taking home the award for Matlock. When it comes to the big series category, it's likely going to be Severance versus The Pit. You know, we don't ever want to count out any of these other big heavy hitters because of course there are a lot of Paradise fans or a lot of White Lotus fans, but The Pit came in really stronger than anyone ever expected and really in a way that no one saw coming and everyone loves some Noah Wiley in their life. So I think that it's going to be a big night for The Pit. Oh, yeah. Let's turn to the comedies now because we need something to laugh about these days. We have stand-up comedian Nate R. Varghese hosting also a slew of strong contenders for the Outstanding Comedy Series Award. What can we expect there? Yeah, I think Nate is going to be leading the night and keeping it as light as possible, which is of course, like you said, what do we need right now? He's said that he's going to stay away from politics for the big night and really try to focus on just celebrating TV and what we love to see in TV. So that is very exciting. And then as it goes to the comedy series, the studio has really made a splash this year and Hollywood really likes to award Hollywood. We've seen it many years before. So it looks like it's going to come down to the studio versus hacks in the comedy category, both shows based on Hollywood, both really making a splash time and time again with both their lead and supporting cast. I love that. Hollywood loves Hollywood. Also, Emily, you note in a recent piece that CBS's Survivor is the most watched Emmy nominated series this year. That's according to Nielsen. Tell us what you found and why this show, which airs on CBS, is so timeless after 48 seasons. As someone who's watched all 48, I'm a good person to ask that. Yes, it was reported that over 400 million total hours were watched this year, which was more than double the top rated, the top watched shows like The White Lotus and Monsters. A lot of that is due to, you know, because past seasons are streaming. And so that goes into account as well. They have two seasons a year. This is a show that it's familiar to people. In a time where a lot is uncertain and there is a lot of, you know, hard things to see on TV, this is something you can tune into and smile at and watch alongside Jeff Probst and get inspired week after week and watch with your family, your friends, by yourself and make you feel happy.
