Kansas lawmakers have passed a bill that would classify synthetic 7-OH, often referred to as 'gas station heroin,' as a schedule one substance, making Kansas the first state in the region to take this step. The bill now awaits the signature of Governor Laura Kelly. 

Meanwhile, Missouri is taking legal action against a major producer of 7-OH and is advancing its own statewide ban following several local bans. Advocates and law enforcement officials believe these measures will help reduce the availability of the drug and support recovery efforts in affected communities.

Both Missouri and Kansas took major steps to get what's been called gas station heroin off the shelves. I'm Isabella Ladan and I've been reporting extensively on synthetic 7-oh-h in our i-team series Strong High Weak Laws. Missouri is taking legal action against the main producer of the drug and a bill to ban it statewide is heading to the governor's desk in Kansas. We're amplifying the voices of advocates who have been pushing to see legislative action. A powerful drug that flew off gas station shelves from popularity now flying off of shelves from multiple bans in the metro. I think a lot of people are finding out that it's not so safe. Joey Thomas works with recovering addicts at Healing House KC and sees the toll 7-oh-h takes on the KC metro. The more synthetic drugs that are on the shelves in stores the more opportunities there are for people to relapse and have setbacks. Just seeing some of these bans and the different things happening it really helps what we're doing here. Kansas lawmakers passed a bill that classifies 7-oh-h as a schedule one substance. The first state in the region to do so. It's now headed to Governor Laura Kelly's desk. I think it's a positive step forward. Dan Neal works with law enforcement on dangerous drug trends. He says Kansas's ban would create a domino effect for the Midwest. I think it would give law enforcement the tea to be able to arrest or charge somebody for the possession of that and start getting this dangerous drug off the street. Missouri Attorney General Catherine Hannaway is suing KC company American Shaman for illegally selling and making 7-oh-h. She's asked the courts to stop all American Shaman sales and shut down business for a year. It's impacting the entire United States. A statewide ban is also making its way to the Missouri Senate floor following local bans in KC Moe, Blue Springs and Gladstone.
