Kansas City first responders ended a tragic week on a high note with their second annual community giveaway event: Back to School Bash and Splash at Heathwood Park.

First responders in Kansas City, Kansas, held a school supply drive at Heathwood Park, motivated by the recent loss of Wyandotte County Sheriff's Deputy Elijah Ming, who was killed in the line of duty. The event, attended by police, fire, and sheriff's departments, distributed 700 backpacks and other essential items to local families in need.

Colleagues and community members noted that Deputy Ming was passionate about community outreach and believed he would have supported the event. The gathering served as both a tribute to his service and a way for first responders to reconnect with the community after a difficult week.

A school supplies drive in KCK has a new motivation behind it this year. It's been nearly one week since Wyandotte Sheriff's Deputy Elijah Ming was shot and killed in the line of duty. Today, a group of first responders came together to support the community, handing out supplies with the weight of last week's events at the front of their minds. And for the Sheriff's Office and law enforcement, all public safety that's that's, you know, dealt with this tragedy all week, it's good to be here to support the community. Tonight, KSHB 41's Rachel Henderson amplifies the voice of a community who say Deputy Ming would want this to go on. It's been a week since Wyandotte County Sheriff's Deputy Elijah Ming died in the line of duty. I'm Rachel Henderson and I spoke to his colleagues about being at an event today that they say he would have loved. Good morning and welcome. Saturday morning was a lot. Do we have any Marvel ones? What about sharks? Sharks, a lot of options and a lot of people. This isn't what I was truly expecting when I came down here, and that's a lot of backpacks. 700 to be exact. It's a great need in it. You can see by the variety of the people that's out here. It was Kim Wilson's first time at the KCK first responders back to school, bash and splash. And we got here early so we were first in line. That line was a long one, but so is the list of expenses. From toiletry to soap, deodorant Saturday, the police, fire, and Sheriff's Office filled a need. We're here to support him and support the community. That support has gone both ways. This week we called him for a reason. Wyandotte County Sheriff's Deputy Elijah Ming died in the line of duty exactly one week ago. It's fitting that today we're back out in the community, engaging with the kids, which is something he loved to do. The community showing their appreciation for a call. Law enforcement didn't have to answer Saturday, knowing they still grieve one of their own, answering his last. I did get to meet him a few times and see me always had a smile on his face, ending a rough week with lots of joy. For folks like Jennifer, that's by far the greatest gift.
