Jeremy Buckingham, who has been investigating these disappearances for eight years, is confident he has enough support among Upper House members to move the inquiry forward, though final approval from the Labor Party caucus is pending.

The proposed inquiry would focus on disappearances between 1974 and 1994, the period during which Milat was active. While not all cases are believed to be connected to Milat, there is speculation from both public and private sources within the police that he may have been responsible for many more murders than those for which he was convicted. The potential scale of the crimes and the possibility of uncovering new information are key motivations for the inquiry.

I'll tell you, there are 42 members in the New South Wales Upper House, so Jeremy Buckingham needs 21 people to come along with him in this call for a parliamentary inquiry into all those missing people, all those disappearances that have been unaccounted for. He's confident he's got those numbers. The Upper House is a strange thing in New South Wales. It has many independents and minor party members. Labour is the largest party there, but they've only got 15 votes. I am told that there are Labor members who are keen to see this inquiry go ahead, but that still has to be cleared by the Labor Party caucus. That's not yet a sure thing. But many of those minor party members I'm hearing are keen to see it come to pass. And so in the coming days, I think we'll get a lot more clarity about it and see whether Jeremy Buckingham's confidence is soundly based. And we're talking about potentially hundreds of victims here. Do the numbers actually stack up? Well, he's been looking at this for eight years. He has looked at over 500 people who have disappeared in the period that he's looking at. So effectively from about 1974 to 1994, which is when Malat was arrested over the Belanglo disappearances, the bodies that were found there in the state forest. Now, obviously, not all of those are going to be down to Ivan Malat, but he believes a great number potentially are. And police have said privately and publicly they think that Malat committed many more murders. Some police say maybe one or two more murders. But one police officer is on the record as saying that he thought that there were 80 murders. That was a senior police officer who was involved in the investigation. So the idea that Malat has killed many more people is not altogether new. The scale of it is a key question. And whether a political inquiry, a parliamentary inquiry will find the new details that might help unearth the truth about more of those disappearances.
