Israel has stopped aid from entering northern Gaza but is still allowing it to enter from the south, two officials said after images circulated of masked men on aid trucks.

Israeli officials have announced a halt to aid deliveries into northern Gaza, citing concerns that supplies intended for civilians were being taken by Hamas fighters, following images of masked men on aid trucks. Representatives from Gaza's clans, however, stated that the trucks were being protected by tribal efforts and denied any involvement by Palestinian factions, including Hamas, which also denied the allegations.

The ongoing conflict has left much of Gaza in ruins, with thousands killed and millions displaced. Humanitarian organizations report that aid distribution in the region has been marred by violence, with repeated incidents of deadly force at distribution points. The United Nations has called for an immediate ceasefire, the release of hostages, and increased humanitarian access to Gaza.

Israeli officials say aid into northern Gaza halted

Israeli officials on Thursday said the country had stopped desperately needed food and supplies from entering the northern part of the war-shattered Gaza Strip, saying that images of masked men on aid trucks showed that Hamas fighters were stealing what was meant for civilians. But representatives of Gaza's influential clans said the trucks were being protected as part of what they said was a process managed, quote, solely through tribal efforts, and that no Palestinian faction, a reference to Hamas, was a part of it. The clans came today to form a stance to prevent the aggressors and the thieves from stealing the food that belongs to our people and taking it to merchants to sell on the market at high prices. We want this aid to be distributed to everybody and for every person to get their share. Hamas, the militant group that now controls only parts of Gaza after nearly two years of war with Israel, denied any involvement. The war was sparked by a Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, killing nearly 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking 251 others hostage into Gaza. Israel's subsequent invasion has so far killed more than 56,000 Gazans, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. It has reduced the territory to rubble and rendered nearly the entire population of more than two million homeless. The U.S. and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, which operates aid distribution sites in southern and central Gaza, said on X that it was the only humanitarian organization permitted on Thursday to distribute food in Gaza. But that distribution has been marred by bloodshed. Israeli forces have repeatedly opened fire near distribution points in recent weeks. Palestinian medics said dozens were killed on Tuesday trying to get food. A representative of one of Gaza's clans described the distribution points as death traps. Young people go to die in the death traps. This is unacceptable. Every day we have death traps. Every day, 50 to 60 people die while getting the aid. We want to prevent this death. As of the 25th of June, we have actually 598 reportedly killed in total. Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, on Thursday said the killings at aid sites underscore the need for an immediate truce. What we need again is a ceasefire, release of hostages, and an all-out effort to get humanitarian assistance into Gaza. Twenty hostages remain in Hamas captivity in Gaza, while the group is holding the bodies of 30 who have died.

It was not clear if Hamas’ statement meant it had accepted the proposal from US President Donald Trump for a 60-day ceasefire.
