This expansion, particularly since the escalation of conflict in Gaza, has led to severe disruptions for Palestinians, who now face lengthy detours and delays in their daily commutes and business activities. 

Palestinian residents describe being trapped between settlements and gates, with some forced to use unpaved paths or carts to reach their land. The checkpoints, which have increasingly been placed within neighborhoods, are reported to hinder access to essential services and create a climate of fear and intimidation. Local voices and observers argue that these measures systematically fragment Palestinian communities and undermine the prospects for a viable Palestinian state.

These rocky and unpaved paths were never meant for vehicles. But with road closures and increasing military checkpoints, Palestinians like Younis Aqel say they have no choice but to risk it. The alternative, hours lost at military checkpoints or exhausting drives that could go around illegal Israeli settlements. Younis is a farmer from Halhoul city in the southern occupied West Bank. He struggles to make a living selling his produce to nearby villages. A simple act now turned into a daily struggle. The journey that once took him a couple of minutes now could last more than an hour if he's lucky. They've completely trapped us between two illegal settlement outposts and two Israeli gates preventing us from reaching our land so we have to use carts. But the harassment doesn't stop here. The Israeli army sometimes simply blocks us from returning to our own homes. Younis' wife Rida says even walking home is a dangerous journey. This is an Israeli settler grazing his sheep on Palestinian land near her home. I was sick and walking to the doctor with my young daughter when six Israeli military vehicles surrounded us. It's terrifying. The settler regularly attack and intimidate us. We live in constant fear in our own neighborhood. When Israel militarily occupied the West Bank in 1967, it started building illegal Israeli settlements and then expanded them, systematically dissecting Palestinian cities and communities from one another. It also built checkpoints in and around cities. Since the war on Gaza started, the Israeli army has installed dozens of new ones and reactivated others. There are now nearly 1,000 checkpoints, obstacles and roadblocks, according to the UN. They no longer just separate cities. They've been erected in the heart of neighborhoods, disrupting everyday life. This coercive environment seeks to basically humiliate and subjugate and hinder people from getting access to their fundamental rights in a way that would make them then leave. It's a calculated move, Palestinians say, to prevent them from having a viable state.
